Scholarships

Scholarship Sunday, June 8, 2014, celebrates the academic achievements of Trinity United Church of Christ members who are pursing scholarly endeavors as well as those who have graduated from an educational institution in 2014.

2014 TUCC Graduate Recognition Ceremony

Trinity recognizes and honors its members who have completed elementary, high school, undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of study. TUCC member graduates are encouraged to participate in the Graduate Recognition Ceremony. In order to participate, Trinity 2014 graduates MUST submit a completed Graduate Recognition Form to the Scholarship and Education Committee by 6:00 pm on Wednesday, May 14, 2014.

2014 TUCC Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Trinity members are encouraged to apply for various church-sponsored, family and organization scholarship awards. The eligibility criteria for each scholarship are listed on the succeeding pages. Overall requirements for consideration of a scholarship award are listed below:

Scholarship Requirements

  • Applicants MUST be members of Trinity UCC for at least one year
  • Applicants may apply for only one scholarship application.
  • Applicants must submit a completed Ministry Verification Form signed by an authorized ministry partner indicating current participation in the respective ministry for at least one year
  • Students attending college out of town may participate in Adopt A Student as their Ministry
  • Applicants must submit current official transcripts and test scores with application as specified by the respective scholarship when submitted.
  • All required essays must be typed double spaced, using 12 pt. font size
  • It is solely the responsibility of the applicant applying for a scholarship to ensure all required documentation is received by the deadline. Late and/or incomplete applications are ineligible and will not be considered by the committee.


Renewable Scholarship Requirements

  • Applicants may reapply for scholarships designated as renewable for up to the specified years of renewal excluding the initial scholarship award. Use Renewal Application Form for renewal consideration.
  • B” GPA equivalent or better is required for consideration of all renewable scholarships


DEADLINE

Graduate Recognition Forms and Scholarship applications must be received by the Scholarship and Education Committee on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 – 6:00 pm at the church Mailroom- Attention: Scholarship Committee or submitted via email to scholarship@trinitychicago.org. All graduates, scholarship applicants, or family representatives must be present on Scholarship Sunday, June 8, 2014. All graduates, scholarship applicants or family representatives must check-in Wright Chapel no later than 1:30 p.m. SCHOLARSHIPS WILL NOT BE AWARDED IF THE WINNING APPLICANT OR A FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE IS NOT PRESENT TO ACCEPT THE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD.

General Scholarships

Rev. Barbara J. Allen Scholarship - For Such a Time as This!

Applicants for this scholarship must be 35 years old or older who are currently enrolled in college to complete his/her first baccalaureate degree after an extended period of absence. At the time of application, applicants must have completed at least one course and currently registered to continue study at an accredited college or university. The scholarship is renewable annually for up to three (3) years. Lucille Ellison/Kathryn Brown Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be graduating high school students. Consideration will be given to applicants with less than a “B” GPA. Applicants must submit: •Current official high school transcript and ACT/SAT test scores •Copy of acceptance letter from the college/university you plan to attend •Two (2) letters of recommendation from: 1. Dr. Manford J. Bryd, Jr. Scholarship

Applicants must be currently enrolled college students (2nd year thru graduate level). The award is renewable for up to three (3) years. Applicants must submit:•Current official college/university transcript •300-500 word essay on the Black Value System •Two (2) letters of recommendation from: 1. Adult member of Trinity U.C.C. 2. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Scholarship

Honors the legacy of scholarly achievement and servant leadership as exemplified in the collegiate and lifetime achievements of Jewel Brothers Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelly, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle and Vertner Woodson Tandy, the founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., -full bio- and recognizes a graduating African American male high school senior who personifies scholarly achievement, school and community leadership and seeks to attend a four-year college or university to pursue a baccalaureate degree. Applicants must submit:•Current official transcripts and ACT/SAT test sores •300-500 word essay on the Black Value System •Copy of acceptance letter/ registration in a four-year college or university •Three (3) letters of recommendation from: 1. Rupert Graham, Sr. Award

Streisand Jana Sanders Memorial Scholarship

For child of a single parent, graduating from high school, registered to attend a Historical Black College or University (HBCU). Student must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.5 (c+). Applicants must submit: •Current official high school transcript with ACT/SAT test scores •Copy of college acceptance letter and proof of registration for next semester •300 word essay •Official documentation of community service, dates, who, why, when, where, etc. •Two (2) letters of recommendation from: 1. Cheryl Guyton Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes graduating high school seniors with a minimum “B” GPA or equivalent and scores 26 or higher on the ACT and/or 1760 or higher on the SAT. The scholarship is renewable thru completion of the baccalaureate degree or up to three (3) years. Applicants must submit:•Current official transcript and ACT/SAT scores •Copy of acceptance letter from college or university you plan to attend •500-600 word Personal statement outlining your personal life goals which includes a paragraph about your personal, community interests and a community activity or program in which you are involved •Two (2) letters of recommendation from: 1. School principal or counselor, and 2. The Arts

Joseph W. Evans - Struggling Artist Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes visual artists (in areas including drawing, painting, photography) grades 9 thru college. Applicants must verify community involvement. This scholarship is renewable depending on current grade (?). Applicants must submit:•Three (3) examples of your work (will be returned) •A 250-word essay on artistic interests, goals and aspirations •Two (2) letters of recommendation from: 1. Art teacher or adult member of Trinity UCC 2. Dr. Jeffrey P. Radford Memorial Scholarship

Honors Dr. Radford’s 30 years of consecrated and devoted service at Trinity United Church of Christ and recognizes academic achievement and personal development to the ministry of music in the Christian church. Applicants must be music majors at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Elsie Benita Haines Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes students in Culinary Arts and/or Home Economics. Delores M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes a second semester or higher college student who maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA in an accredited Business program, preference given to an Accounting major. Dwain Phillip Lubin Engineering Scholarship

Recognizes a graduating African American male high school senior who ranks 21 or lower in his class who has been accepted into an electrical, mechanical or structural engineering undergraduate program, preferably at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The scholarship is renewable for up to three (3) years. Mildred Chapman Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes 2 or 4 year nursing students. The Scholarship is renewable for up to three (3) years. Eva Mae Warfield-Johnson Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes an adult female nursing student who has been accepted into a 2 or 4 year registered nursing program. Applicant must have at least a C+, 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable. Applicants must submit:•Current official transcript •300 word essay, “How I plan to use my skills in helping my church and community.” •One (1) letter of recommendation from college/university professor or counselor •Copy of acceptance letter into a registered 2 or 4 year nursing program •Two (2) sealed letters of recommendation from 1. Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. / Deacon Don Moody Scholarship

Recognizes individuals, age 18 and older, who have completed the 12-Step Program and desire to further their formal education in substance abuse and/or rehabilitation. Prospective scholarship recipients must to commit to volunteer service on the crisis line of the TUCC Drug/Alcohol Ministry or work in a related 12-Step Program. This scholarship is renewable for up to three (3) years and applicants must submit:•Current official college or university transcript •Copy of acceptance letter from college/university applicant plans to attend •300 word essay/bio which addresses personal and/or family addiction, why you should you receive this scholarship and your long-term goals after graduation. •Three (3) sealed letters of recommendation from 1. Swanegan Memorial Teacher's Scholarship

Recognizes education majors at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. The scholarship is renewable and recipients may reapply depending upon current educational level. Honors the dedicated commitment to Christian beliefs exemplified in the lifetime achievements of Dr. Mary Henderson Wright, who was a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority -full bio- and recognizes a graduating female high school senior who plans to major in mathematics or education. The Institute of The Black World Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., Travel Scholarship

The Joseph A. Stroud Scholarship

Recognizes undergraduate, graduate and post graduate students in journalism, print media, radio/TV production or a related field. Rev. Samuel L. Ellis Theological/ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes students enrolled in accredited seminaries. Honors the personal development and fidelity to Christian beliefs held by Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. and recognizes students enrolled in an ATS accredited seminary. The scholarship is renewable for up to three (3) years.
